A celebrated writer, whose life has been filled with success, loses his wife Esther, a war reporter, when she vanishes. Authorities suspect either kidnapping or abandonment, and he is the first suspect. Years later he is still thinking about her and falls under the spell of the Zahir, in Arabic tradition something that, once seen, obsesses the mind. Following leads takes him to a young man, Mikhail, and eventually to Central Asia. Coelho writes the story in first person and uses it to talk about freedom, routine, and the need to let go.
Readers who like novels that pair a love story with a spiritual search will find it fitting. It is a contemporary book that asks what we do when we cannot stop thinking about someone.
Inward-looking; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
