Maria is a young Brazilian woman from a poor village who dreams of a better life. She goes to Rio and then to Geneva after being promised a job as a dancer, and she ends up working as a prostitute. There she keeps a diary, in which she writes about love, her body and her desires. She meets a young painter, Ralf Hart, and the two must negotiate the boundary between sex and love. Paulo Coelho wrote the novel as an exploration of sexuality as a spiritual path, in his usual direct, parable-like manner.
It suits readers of Coelho who want his take on love and desire, and those looking for a short novel about self-discovery. Some may find the philosophizing simplistic, but it is a quick read that invites debate.
Inward-looking; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Curious Generalist. Which reader are you?
