C. Rogozanu analyzes the stagnant nature of contemporary Romanian society, positioning it as an era of prolonged transition that functions as a new "middle age." The text examines how local political discourse and economic shifts have shaped the everyday lives of the working and middle classes. By focusing on the friction between public policy and street-level reality, the author identifies specific failures in institutional modernization. He details how the collective identity of the population remains suspended between post-communist legacies and the pressures of late-stage capitalism, resulting in a culture of permanent uncertainty.
This analysis serves readers interested in Eastern European sociology and Romanian political science. It provides a framework for understanding the disconnect between official state narratives and the lived experiences of citizens. Readers will gain a specific vocabulary for discussing systemic inequality and the deterioration of public services over the last three decades. The book offers a critical perspective for those seeking to move beyond superficial partisan debates to understand the underlying structural dynamics that keep the country in a state of developmental limbo.
Deep, outward-looking and contemplative; a moderate read.
