About the book

Josef K. wakes on his thirtieth birthday to find two men in his bank-clerk's lodging, telling him he is under arrest, though no one will say what the charge is. He is allowed to go to work, but the Court that is pursuing him is a vast, hidden bureaucracy with offices in attics and slum courtyards. K. tries a lawyer, a painter and the chaplain, each of whom is useless. Kafka left the manuscript unfinished and unpublished at his death in 1924.

Bureaucracy, guilt and the absurd are the subjects. It is short, disquieting, and the source of the word "Kafkaesque".
