Extraordinary Means

About the book

Lane, a high-achieving seventeen-year-old, finds out that he has a drug-resistant form of tuberculosis and is sent to Latham House, a sanatorium in the Sierra Nevada, for teenagers with the disease. There he meets Sadie, a witty, rebellious girl, and a group of other patients, and learns to live with the possibility of dying. Robyn Schneider's story follows the friendships, small rebellions, and romance of a group who have little time and no control.

A good choice for young adult readers who like stories about illness, friendship, and first love, in the vein of The Fault in Our Stars. It is funny and sad by turns.

Reading profile

Practical, inward-looking, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
