Flatlandia: Racconto fantastico a più dimensioni
A Square is a citizen of Flatland, a two-dimensional world of lines and polygons, where a person's social class depends on the number of sides and women are lines. After the narrator explains the strict social order, a sphere from Spaceland visits him in a dream, takes him up into a third dimension, and lets him see his world from above. He tries to preach what he has learned and is jailed. Edwin Abbott, a headmaster, wrote this satire of Victorian class and gender in 1884, and it works equally well as an introduction to higher dimensions.
Readers who like math, geometry, and social satire will find it short and ingenious. It gives a clear intuition of how a fourth dimension might be imagined.
Deep, outward-looking and open-ended; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Deep Diver. Which reader are you?
