Frances Price is a New York widow whose husband died years earlier, leaving her a wealthy woman. She has now run out of money. Patrick deWitt follows her as she moves, with her grown son Malcolm and a cat who may carry her late husband's spirit, to a borrowed apartment in Paris. The cast includes a clairvoyant, a private investigator, a lonely widow, and Malcolm's fiancée. The tone is dry and absurd, and the story is a comedy of manners about money, grief and the strange ways that families stick together.
Readers who like dark, deadpan humor and eccentric characters will enjoy it. It's a short, stylish novel that also touches real feelings about loss, and it appeals to people who like deWitt's earlier The Sisters Brothers.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
