About the book

Kuhn, the narrator, is a young man who has been crippled by an accident and takes up composing music. He tells how he falls in love with Gertrud, a singer, and how his friend Heinrich Muoth, an opera singer, also is drawn to her. As their friendship goes on, the pain of unrequited love shapes the way they think about art and about life. Hermann Hesse wrote this novel in 1910, and it is a quiet story about loneliness, music, and the difficulty of being an artist.

It suits readers who like Hesse's early novels and who enjoy reflective, melancholy stories about art and love. It is short and lyrical, and offers a link between his early and later themes.
