About the book

காச்சர் கோச்சர் is a short novel narrated by a young man in Bangalore whose family has risen from poverty to prosperity through his uncle's spice business. As money comes in, the cramped household moves to a larger house and its members begin to change: the father is sidelined, the mother guards her comfort, and his sister's marriage falters. The title is an invented sound for something tangled and irreparably stuck, a way of describing the web of compromises that now bind them together. The ending is abrupt and unsettling.

Readers who like short, contained literary fiction and stories about social mobility will find it easy to read in one sitting and difficult to forget. The Indian setting adds specific detail about class and family life.
