Banu Mushtaq, a Kannada writer, lawyer and activist from Karnataka, collects short stories about the lives of Muslim women in small towns. Her characters deal with the demands of marriage, family, religion and community, including patriarchal control, quiet resistance and moments of humour. Written over decades, the stories use everyday speech and domestic detail to show the pressures women face, and how they find ways to maintain dignity. The stories were later chosen for the English collection Heart Lamp.
Readers who want to learn about Muslim women's lives in South India, and anyone interested in regional Indian literature, will find direct and observant fiction. It suits those who like short stories grounded in realism.
Deep and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
