Jolene Zarkades is a helicopter pilot in the Army National Guard and also a wife and mother, with two daughters, living in Seattle. Her marriage to Michael, a lawyer, has become strained and cold. When Jolene is deployed to Iraq, he is left to look after their daughters alone, and the novel follows both sides of a family at war: her combat experience and the pressure of command, and the home front, where Michael and the girls struggle to function. Kristin Hannah pays attention to how a family's roles are rearranged and what a long absence does to trust.
This is for readers who like emotional domestic fiction with real stakes, particularly stories about military families and marriage under pressure. People who enjoy novels that move between two perspectives and end in a hard-won reconciliation will find it absorbing.
Inward-looking; an easy read.
