Jane Wells, a security consultant in Seattle, is given a key by a stranger and finds that it belongs to a storage locker that contains a taxidermied hummingbird and a salamander. It was left to her by Silvina Vess, a wealthy eco-activist who is rumored to be a terrorist and who has died. Jane begins to follow a trail of clues that leads her into a conspiracy involving a corporation and the destruction of animal species, while she deals with her own family and a world in ecological decline.
Jeff VanderMeer writes a thriller set in the near future with a strong ecological thread. Readers who like Annihilation or climate-themed fiction will find an unusual mystery that is as much about extinction as about the plot.
Open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
