About the book

Amir, son of a prominent Kabul businessman, grows up with Hassan, the Hazara son of the family's servant, and the two chase kites through the streets. A tournament win in 1975 turns into a nightmare when Hassan is assaulted by Assef, and Amir lets it happen. The shame pushes Amir to drive Hassan away. Exiled to America after the Soviet invasion, Amir builds a life, but a phone call from Rahim Khan sends him back to Taliban Kabul, where a child named Sohrab waits.

If you read for emotional stakes and a sense of place, this is a good match. It leaves you thinking about loyalty, class and the long shadow of a single betrayal.
