After an air crash, a group of English boys finds itself alone on a tropical island with no adults. Ralph is chosen as chief and sets rules with the conch; Piggy supplies the ideas and the spectacles used to light a fire. Jack and his hunters get more interested in killing pigs than in being rescued, and fear of a "beast" spreads. When Simon discovers the truth about it, the group has already decided on violence.
This short novel is for readers who like allegory about power and group behavior. It leaves a vivid, disturbing picture of how thin the veneer of civilization can be.
Deep, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
