About the book

In Brooklyn, a snowstorm brings a minor car crash between Richard Bowmaster, a university professor, and Evelyn Ortega, a young undocumented Guatemalan woman working as a caregiver. When Evelyn confesses that there is a body in the trunk of her car, Richard enlists his tenant Lucia Maraz, a Chilean academic, and the three set off on a road trip through the storm to dispose of it. The narrative moves back into each character's past: Richard's years in Brazil, Lucia's life in Chile under Pinochet, and Evelyn's escape from violence in Guatemala.

Allende readers will see her usual interest in exile and political violence. Anyone who likes character-driven stories about immigrants, late-life love and shared secrets will find a warm, humane read.
