Inés Suárez is a seamstress in sixteenth-century Spain, whose husband has left for the New World and not returned. She sets sail to look for him and learns that he has died, and in Peru she falls for the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. Together they travel south to conquer Chile, founding Santiago amid battles with the Mapuche, thirst, hunger and political rivalry. Allende makes Inés a woman of action and a legendary figure of the colonial period, narrating her own story as an old woman.
A historical novel for readers who like adventure and romance in the early colonial period of Latin America, told with a female focus on a violent conquest.
Clear-cut; a moderate read.
