Set in the future province of Castalia, this novel follows Joseph Knecht, who rises from gifted pupil to Magister Ludi, master of an intellectual game that combines music, mathematics and philosophy. Castalia's scholars live apart from the everyday world, devoted to pure contemplation. Hesse traces Knecht's growing doubt that such a life can be justified, and what he decides to do about it.
Good for readers drawn to ideas: the tension between thought and action, scholarship and ordinary life, discipline and freedom. It is slow and reflective, closer to a philosophical fable than a plot-driven novel, and best taken at an unhurried pace.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative, open-ended and thought-provoking; a demanding read.
Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
