About the book

Jackson, Mississippi, in the early 1960s, is where Aibileen Clark, a Black maid who has raised seventeen white children, works for the Leefolt family. Her friend Minny Jackson, outspoken and fired often, takes a job with a newcomer, Celia Foote. Skeeter Phelan, a recent college graduate hoping to be a writer, convinces the maids to tell her what it is really like to work for white families, and the risky book that results shakes the town.

Readers who like historical fiction with several strong voices will find plenty here. You get a view of Southern racism and of the small acts of courage that challenged it.
