About the book

Cora is enslaved on a cotton plantation in Georgia, an outcast even among the other people held there. When Caesar, a newly arrived man, proposes escape, she agrees. In Colson Whitehead's novel the Underground Railroad is a literal network of tracks and tunnels beneath the South. Each stop, from South Carolina to North Carolina, Tennessee and Indiana, shows a different version of American racism, while the slave catcher Ridgeway follows close behind.

Whitehead bends history to make a moral point, and the result moves like a chase story. You get a fast, episodic chase story and a clear picture of how freedom was promised and withdrawn in different forms across the country.
