Addie Moore, a widow in the small town of Holt, Colorado, pays a visit to her neighbor Louis Waters, also widowed, and proposes something unusual: that they spend nights together in her bed, just to talk and keep each other company through the dark hours. Despite gossip, and the disapproval of their grown children, the two begin sharing stories of their marriages, regrets, and small pleasures. Haruf writes in plain, spare sentences, and the story deals with loneliness in old age and with how families respond when older people choose happiness.
A very short novel suited to anyone who likes quiet, humane fiction. Readers who enjoyed Haruf's Plainsong will recognize the same patient attention to ordinary people.
Inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; an easy read.
