About the book

At twenty, Tsukuru Tazaki was suddenly rejected by his four closest friends from high school, with no explanation. He survived the experience but remained convinced that he was colorless, lacking personality, unlike his friends whose surnames included colors. Now thirty-six and working in railway design, he meets Sara, who tells him he must face what happened. He tracks down each of the old friends, in Nagoya and in Finland, and learns what lay behind the break. Haruki Murakami keeps the tone restrained and the plot simple, with music, notably Liszt's Years of Pilgrimage, running through the book.

It is a good choice for readers who want a mild, melancholy novel about friendship, identity and old wounds. Even those new to Murakami can start here, as the story is more grounded than his strangest books.
