In 1912, Turner Buckminster arrives in Phippsburg, Maine, the son of a new minister, and finds the townspeople cold and the church community strict. He befriends Lizzie Bright Griffin, a Black girl who lives on Malaga Island, a poor community of Black and mixed-race families. When the town leaders decide to clear the island to attract tourists, Turner has to choose between his father's authority and what is right. Gary D. Schmidt draws on the real history of Malaga Island.
Middle-grade readers and adults who like historical fiction about justice and friendship will find it moving. It suits classroom discussion about prejudice and community.
Inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
