About the book

In 1968, Doug Swieteck, a fourteen-year-old boy, moves with his family to Marysville, a small town in upstate New York. His father is violent, and his older brother has come back from Vietnam with injuries. Doug finds an unexpected refuge at the town library, where a librarian is selling prints of John James Audubon's Birds of America, and he begins to learn to draw. He also befriends Lil Spicer, a girl who works at the deli.

It is a middle-grade and young adult novel for readers who like stories about overcoming a difficult home through art and friendship. It suits those who enjoyed The Wednesday Wars, the book that comes before it.
