About the book

Juan García Madero is a seventeen-year-old poetry student in Mexico City, who joins the visceral realists, a group of young poets led by Arturo Belano and Ulises Lima. They search for Cesárea Tinajero, a lost poet from the 1920s. After the first section, a diary, the novel becomes a collection of oral testimonies from people who encountered Belano and Lima in Mexico, Europe, Africa and the United States over twenty years, and a final section returns to the desert. Bolaño's book is a portrait of a literary generation.

For readers who enjoy long, rich novels about poets, wandering, and the passage of time. It suits those who like open structure and many voices.
