In 1965, Francesca Johnson, an Italian-born farm wife in Iowa, has the house to herself for four days while her husband and children are at the state fair. A National Geographic photographer named Robert Kincaid arrives, lost, and asks for directions to the covered bridges of Madison County, which he has been hired to photograph. She shows him the way to the Roseman Bridge and offers him dinner. Over those four days, the two fall deeply in love, and Francesca has to choose between passion and the family she has built. Robert James Waller writes it as a story discovered by her children after her death.
It suits readers who like short, sentimental love stories and those who saw the film.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
