Sayuri, an elderly Japanese woman living in New York, recalls her life as a geisha. As a nine-year-old called Chiyo she is taken from her fishing village to an okiya in Gion, Kyoto. She endures the hostility of Hatsumomo, trains under Mameha, and becomes known for her eyes and her dance. Her feelings for the Chairman shape every decision, and her association with the harsh Nobu leads to complications. The war scatters Gion's women.
A good choice for readers who enjoy historical fiction filled with sensory detail. It gives a vivid view of a hidden world and the personal cost of survival within it.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
