Oskar Schell is nine, inventive and anxious, and his father died in the World Trade Center on September 11. In his father's closet he finds a small key in an envelope marked "Black" and decides to visit every person with that surname in New York until he finds the lock. His search overlaps with letters from his grandfather, who survived the bombing of Dresden, and the grandmother's story. Jonathan Safran Foer uses photographs, blank pages and odd typography.
Experimental, emotional fiction about loss fills these pages. It is a book you can finish quickly but one that asks to be reread.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Mindful Reader. Which reader are you?
