Turtle Alveston is a fourteen-year-old girl who lives with her father, Martin, in an isolated house on the coast of Northern California. She is a skilled marksman and spends her days in the woods and on the beach. Her father is charismatic, abusive and controlling, and has trapped her in a violent relationship she believes is love. When she meets two boys, a glimpse of a life outside her father's control opens up, and she must decide whether to fight back. The novel is tense and has graphic scenes of abuse.
A challenging novel for adult readers who want a story about survival and resilience in a harsh setting. It is a good fit for those who can handle intense subject matter.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
