Narcissus is a young monk and teacher at the Mariabronn monastery, devoted to discipline and the life of the mind. Goldmund, a student who admires him, is awakened by Narcissus to his own nature, and he leaves the monastery to roam the countryside. He pursues love affairs, survives plague and hardship, and becomes a sculptor of religious figures. Hermann Hesse uses the friendship of the two men to contrast the spirit and the senses, thought and art, and the question of how a person can be faithful to his own nature.
Readers who like philosophical novels about vocation and friendship will find a classic here. It is also a good pick for those who liked Siddhartha and want another Hesse story.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
