Twelve-year-old Lanesha lives in New Orleans's Ninth Ward with Mama Ya-Ya, an elderly woman who takes care of her and who has the gift of foresight. Lanesha can see ghosts, and she is teased by classmates. When Hurricane Katrina approaches in 2005 and Mama Ya-Ya senses that disaster is coming, the two decide to stay, and when the storm hits, Lanesha must use her courage to save herself and those around her. Jewell Parker Rhodes tells the story with a mixture of realism and touches of folk belief.
Young readers, teachers and families interested in a middle-grade story about Katrina will find an accessible and moving account. It suits those who want a story about resilience, community and the strength of a child in a disaster.
Clear-cut; an easy read.
