Neagu Djuvara presents a chronological narrative of the Romanian people, beginning with the ethnogenesis of the Daco-Romans and continuing through the Middle Ages, the Phanariot period, and the 1989 Revolution. He prioritizes a synthesis of social and political evolution over a mere list of dates. The text incorporates over 250 illustrations, including maps, portraits, and architectural sketches, to ground historical events in visual reality. Djuvara addresses controversial topics such as the Cuman influence on early state formation and the complexities of Romanian integration into European structures.
This volume serves students and curious laypeople who seek a narrative framework for Romanian history without academic jargon. Readers gain a clear understanding of how the three Romanian principalities interacted with neighboring empires, such as the Ottoman and Habsburg powers. By the final chapter, the reader can identify the specific cultural and geopolitical shifts that defined the modern Romanian state. This edition functions as a visual and textual guide for those requiring a coherent overview of national identity.
