About the book

Odder is a young sea otter off the coast of Monterey Bay who is more adventurous than the others and tends to ignore the cautions of her raft. She is injured in an encounter with a shark, and she is rescued by humans and taken to an aquarium, where she meets a surrogate-mother program, and learns to care for orphaned pups. Applegate tells the story in free verse, with short lines, and she writes it through the otter's perspective. The story is based on a real aquarium program.

A good read for middle-grade readers and animal fans, and for those who liked Applegate's The One and Only Ivan. It moves quickly and touches on conservation.
