About the book

This foundational poem of Greek literature describes how Odysseus, after helping to take Troy, spends ten years trying to reach his island kingdom. Poseidon blocks his way after the hero blinds the Cyclops. Odysseus survives encounters with Circe, the Sirens and a whirlpool, and loses his companions, before arriving alone. In Ithaca, the story turns to a quieter drama of recognition: he reveals himself to his son and his faithful servants and plans the confrontation with the suitors who have taken over his house.

A great choice for readers who want to meet the original of many fantasy and adventure tropes. It rewards reading slowly and aloud, and it pairs well with the Iliad.
