About the book

Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, was cast out by his brother Antonio and has lived for twelve years on a remote island with his daughter Miranda. With his books of magic, he controls the spirit Ariel and the half-human Caliban. When a ship carrying Antonio, the king of Naples and his son Ferdinand passes by, Prospero raises a storm and wrecks it. The play follows the survivors across the island, a romance between Miranda and Ferdinand, a plot against Prospero, and his final choice between revenge and forgiveness. Shakespeare wrote it near the end of his career, and it deals with power, colonization and illusion.

It is a good play for readers who want Shakespeare at his most magical and reflective, and for those interested in how theatre shows control and release. It is also short enough to read in an evening.
