Paramahansa Yogananda describes his life as an Indian monk who brought yoga to the West. Born Mukunda in Gorakhpur, he finds his teacher, Swami Sri Yukteswar, and trains in his hermitage, receiving the monastic name Yogananda. He reports his visits with saints and wonder-workers and explains the lineage of Kriya Yoga, going back to Babaji. In 1920 he sails to the United States, lectures to large audiences, and sets up the Self-Realization Fellowship. The book also records his return visit to India and his meeting with Gandhi.
Readers who want a devotional but readable portrait of a spiritual teacher will find it here. It is also a classic for those who practice meditation.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and clear-cut; a moderate read.
