The Poem of the Cid is the oldest surviving long poem in Castilian Spanish, copied in the fourteenth century from a work likely composed around 1200. It tells of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, who is exiled by King Alfonso VI and sets out with his loyal followers to win a living by fighting the Moors, taking Valencia. He sends gifts to the king, and eventually regains his favor. Later, his daughters marry the Infantes de Carrión, who abuse them, and the Cid demands justice at court. The poem celebrates loyalty, honor and ambition.
Students of Spanish literature and readers of medieval epics will find a foundation text.
Outward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
