The Popol Vuh is the sacred narrative of the K'iche' Maya of highland Guatemala. It begins with the creation of the world by the gods, the failed attempts to create humans out of mud and wood, and the success of making people out of maize. It tells of the Hero Twins, Hunahpú and Xbalanqué, who defeat the lords of the underworld, Xibalbá, in a ball game and tricks, and avenge their father and uncle. It ends with the history of the K'iche' lineages. The text was recorded in the sixteenth century in the Latin alphabet.
Readers of mythology, those interested in Mesoamerican culture and anyone curious about the oldest narratives of the Americas will find a foundational text. It is useful as both a story and a source for understanding Maya religion and worldview.
Deep, contemplative, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
