About the book

In October 1972, a plane carrying a Uruguayan rugby team, with family and friends, crashes high in the Andes. Of the forty-five on board, many die in the crash or in an avalanche, and the survivors are left with little food, extreme cold, and no certainty of rescue. After the radio tells them the search has been called off, they make the decision to eat the bodies of the dead. Piers Paul Read, who interviewed the survivors, reconstructs how they organized themselves and how two of them, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, trekked across the mountains to find help after seventy-two days.

A strong choice for readers who like true survival stories and want a thorough account of what happened. It also gives a frank look at moral choices under extreme pressure.
