Alistair MacLean's World War II thriller sends a team of British commandos led by Major John Smith to a mountaintop fortress in the Bavarian Alps, the Schloss Adler, headquarters of the German secret service. Their mission is to rescue an American general who knows the plans for the Second Front. Once they are inside, double agents and betrayals complicate things, and Smith has to keep his mission secret while contending with traitors and a surprise team member. The book is full of cable-car chases, disguises and shootouts.
