Lady Hester Theale, a sensible woman of twenty-nine long since resigned to spinsterhood, is traveling to see her family when she meets Amanda Smith, a young runaway from the country who is on her way to London to find a grandson of her late guardian. Hester cannot leave the girl alone, and she gets drawn into protecting her. Sir Gareth Ludlow, an old acquaintance still grieving for his dead fiancée, is pulled in too. Georgette Heyer builds a Regency comedy of mistaken motives, awkward rescues, and a slow-moving love story.
It is for readers who like witty historical romance with plenty of period slang and clever dialogue. Fans of Heyer's other Regency novels, and anyone who likes a comedy of manners where the heroine is sensible rather than swooning, will enjoy the characters' conversations.
Practical, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Escapist Adventurer. Which reader are you?
