Sally J. Freedman is a ten-year-old girl in 1947, who has a vivid imagination and sees herself as the heroine of her own movies. When her father becomes ill, her family spends the winter in Miami Beach, where she befriends elderly people and becomes convinced that a neighbor is Hitler in hiding. She is also very curious about death, boys and what happened to the Jewish people in Europe. Judy Blume's novel draws partly on her own childhood and treats Sally's fears and fantasies with humor.
It suits middle-grade readers who like realistic stories with a strong voice. Adults who grew up with Blume will enjoy the nostalgia.
Clear-cut and thought-provoking; an easy read.
