Four twelve-year-old boys in a small Maine town in 1960, Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern, set off along the railroad tracks to find the body of a missing boy, Ray Brower, who was hit by a train. Along the way they face a junkyard dog, a bridge crossing, a swamp, and their own troubled home lives. Gordie, who wants to be a writer and is grieving his older brother, narrates as an adult looking back.
