Ten-year-old Karl Lejon, nicknamed Rusky, is a sickly boy who fears his imminent death. His brave older brother, Jonathan, comforts him with tales of Nangiyala, a magical afterlife where they will reunite. After both brothers die in quick succession, they meet in the Cherry Valley of this new world. However, their peace is threatened by the tyrant Tengil, who rules the neighboring Thorn Valley with an army and a fire-breathing dragon named Katla. The brothers join a resistance movement, engaging in espionage and dangerous mountain crossings to overthrow the oppressor.
Readers of middle-grade fantasy turn to this story for its direct treatment of mortality and grief. It offers a blueprint for bravery in the face of fear and the moral obligation to oppose injustice even when the odds are overwhelming. The audience gains a perspective on the permanence of sibling bonds and the idea that physical weakness does not preclude acts of significant heroism. The narrative provides a framework for discussing heavy emotional transitions through a lens of folklore and adventure.
Thought-provoking; an easy read.
