Natalie Haynes retells the story of Jocasta and Oedipus from the viewpoint of the women. Jocasta, a young Theban queen, is married off to King Laius and later gives birth to a son who is destined to kill his father. The novel alternates with the story of Antigone, Oedipus's daughter, who defies King Creon to bury her brother. Haynes moves between ancient Thebes in lively prose and gives these figures humour and agency, using the plays of Sophocles as the base.
It suits readers who enjoy Greek myth retellings such as Circe and The Song of Achilles. No prior knowledge is required, though readers who know the plays will see where she changes the emphasis.
Thought-provoking; a moderate read.
