Pam Muñoz Ryan's novel is a fictionalised account of the childhood of Neftalí Reyes, who became the poet Pablo Neruda. Born in Chile in the early twentieth century, Neftalí is a shy, sensitive boy who loves nature, collecting things and daydreaming, and who is held back by a stern father who wants him to be practical. He finds inspiration in the rain, the forest, words, and the encouragement of others, and slowly begins to write. Peter Sís's illustrations accompany the text, which is written in a lyrical style that draws from Neruda's poetry.
It is for middle-grade readers who like stories about creativity and growing up. It is also a good introduction to the life of Neruda and a good book for readers who feel different from those around them.
Balanced in tone; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Story Seeker. Which reader are you?
