About the book

Lizzie Hood's thirteen-year-old neighbor and best friend, Evie Verver, disappears from her suburban home one summer. Lizzie, who is also thirteen, has been close to Evie and her family and thought she knew them. As police and neighbors search the area, she finds out that there were things she did not know about her friend, and about Evie's father, the man next door. Megan Abbott captures the intensity of girls' friendships in an American suburb, and she uses Lizzie's narration to build a sense of dread.

Readers who like psychological suspense and portraits of adolescence will find it a tense read. It leans more on character than on police work.
