Gabrielle Caleigh moves to Crickley Hall, an old house in Devon, with her husband Eve and their daughters, hoping to recover from the loss of their young son Cameron, who vanished a year earlier. The house has a dark history: during World War II it was used as a home for evacuated children, and its cellar and rooms hold a terrible story. Soon the family begins to experience cold spots, strange noises and visions. James Herbert blends a ghost story with a mystery about what happened to those children.
Readers of classic British horror who like a haunted house story with a historical secret will find an effective one. It is long and atmospheric, so best read with the lights on.
Practical, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Escapist Adventurer. Which reader are you?
