Faye, a writer, is recently divorced and moves with her two sons to London, where she plans to renovate a flat. The book follows her through a series of encounters with people: a builder who has a firm view of the flat, a neighbor in the basement, a friend, a former lover, a hairdresser, and a poet at a literary event. Rachel Cusk writes the novel as a sequence of conversations in which the characters tell Faye about their lives, while Faye remains in the background. It is the second part of the Outline trilogy.
Readers who like experimental, quiet fiction about identity, loss and listening will find a distinctive book.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative, open-ended and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
