Four women, strangers to one another, decide to rent a medieval castle on the Italian Riviera for April. Lotty Wilkins and Rose Arbuthnot, both unhappy in their marriages, put an advertisement in The Times and look for two others to share costs. They are joined by the stern Mrs Fisher and the beautiful, bored Lady Caroline Dester. At San Salvatore, the sun, the wisteria and the sea slowly change their moods. Elizabeth von Arnim's comedy of manners, set in the 1920s, gives each woman a transformation and a surprise.
Readers who like light, witty period novels about friendship and escape will find a warm, funny story. It is a good pick for anyone who needs a literary holiday.
Contemplative and clear-cut; an easy read.
