Carol Evers is a woman in a small town who has been buried alive, because she suffers from a condition that causes her to fall into deathlike sleeps. Her husband Dwight has arranged for her burial in order to take her wealth. Her first love, Smoke, a gunslinger with a violent past, hears of her situation and rides across the country to save her. In the meantime, Carol's mind drifts in a dreamlike state and tries to find a way to wake. Josh Malerman sets the story in a western landscape with horror and suspense.
